In collaboration with the Geffen School of Medicine and Harbor UCLA Emergency Medicine, we held the second ultrasound workshop of the year for junior medical students. We taught the Focused Abdominal Sonography in Trauma (FAST) exam, which is used primarily to evaluate for intra-abdominal bleeding in trauma patients. Our instructors included EM residents from UCLA/OV-UCLA and Harbor-UCLA, as well as a senior medical student from UC Irvine, which has a fully integrated ultrasound medical curriculum. In total, 165 first year medical students were instructed in small hands-on groups over three days, as well as several second year medical students from the UCLA Emergency Medicine Interest Group. We will follow this workshop with another in Spring 2013 focusing on musculoskeletal ultrasound. Organizers include: Dean Wilkerson, Carl Stevens, Elena Stark, Timothy Jang, Cori Poffenberger, Ali Hussain, Alan Chiem, Steph Machi, Elizabeth Lancaster, and Jeremy Smith. Thanks to Sonosite for providing the ultrasounds. Instructors include: Ashkan Akasheh, Kiah Bertoglio, Alan Chiem, Sara Crager, Amy Douglass, Nelly Ekmejian, Marco Fossati-Bellani, Ali Hussain, Karen Keller, Steph Machi, Brian McNamara, Sarah Medeiros, Vicky Nguyen, Armando Rodriguez, Manny Singh, Thomas Solomon, and Noah Sugarman. |
