In collaboration with the Geffen School of Medicine and Harbor UCLA Emergency Medicine, we held the first ultrasound lab of the year, an introduction to echocardiography, for the first year medical student class. This lab is part of the required Human Biology and Disease 400 year-long course. Our instructors included EM residents from UCLA/OV-UCLA, as well as two senior medical students from UC Irvine, which has a fully integrated ultrasound medical curriculum. In total, 160 first year medical students were instructed in small hands-on groups over three days. We will follow this lab session with another in January 2014 focusing on abdominal ultrasound. Organizers include: Alan Chiem, Timothy Jang, Sheri Klein, Elena Stark, and Carl Stevens. Thanks to Carlton Coulter of Sonosite for providing the ultrasounds. Instructors include: Peter Bloomfield, Alan Chiem, Samantha Costantino, Sara Crager, Kateri Henderson, Timothy Jang, Miguel Mendoza, Ellen Oakley, Armando Rodriguez, Amir Rouhani, Hollie Sandlin, Joelle Schlang, Noah Sugerman, Jessie Wall, and Carmen Wolfe. |
