Dr. Daniel Weingrow provides insightful commentary in the recent CDC investigation linking Pseudomonas growth in respiratory cultures of patients undergoing cardiovascular surgery in a Michigan hospital.  The TEE probes were not contaminated, but the gel used was non-sterile and found to be contaminated with Pseudomonas

This is a reminder to use sterile gel for ultrasound-guided procedures, or when there is contact with non-intact skin or mucosal membranes.
